Visual Communication: Illustration (B.S.)

Visual Communication is an interdisciplinary program that integrates visual acuity with skill and knowledge in areas of graphic design, fine art, communications, technology, and business. Emphasis is placed on the conception, design, planning, and implementation of visual solutions to complex problems in contemporary culture. In addition, the department seeks to encourage freedom of expression and creativity through the development of innovative concepts with professional execution to help students become conversant in the philosophy and psychology of both historical and contemporary art and design forms. The Visual Communication degree program offers four different concentrations that focus on targeted skills within each area. Concentrations include Digital Media DesignGraphic DesignIllustration, and Studio Art.

Visual Communication, the Illustration concentration provides a curriculum integrating studio art with the digital technologies and freelance business practices required for a career in the commercial art field. Illustration students will develop skills to create original, effective, and audience-appropriate illustrations using various techniques required to develop their own visual style. Because most illustrators work as freelancers the Entrepreneurship Certificate will help prepare them for self-employment or the workplace. Critical thinking, assessment of work, and presentation are integrated throughout the curriculum. Students complete the program by developing and exhibiting a portfolio of illustration work that demonstrates the student’s creative vision and personal style.
