Communication: Media Communication (B.A.)
The Media Communication degree is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism, public relations, media production, and/or other communication/media-related fields. Students in this degree program will learn to write, report, create images, capture photographs/video, and/or produce professional communication for a variety of media. This includes the production of media communication in digital environments, including audio, video, and social media. In addition to the Communication Core, all students must complete the Media Arts Foundation. Beyond this Foundation, this program offers three concentrations:
- Journalism-Public Relations
- Media Production
- Design Production
Students in the Media Communication degree must choose one of the above concentrations. Students have the option to choose a second concentration or they may choose electives (which can include a minor) to total 120 credits. If a student wishes to take a minor, it must be from outside of the Media Communication program.
Requirements
Communication Core: 26 Hours
Media Arts Foundations: 21 Hours
Students should choose one of the following options: COM 323 Intro to Cinema or COM 324 Documentary Film.
Students should choose one of the following options: COM 440 (Internship) or COM 480 (Capstone).
All other courses are required.
Journalism-Public Relations: 18 Hours
Students have the option of taking two of the following: COM 315, 332, 333, 337, 338, 359, 426, ENG 274, 277
All other courses are required.
Media Production: 19 Hours
Design Production: 18 Hours
Minor/Electives: To 120 Hours
If a student selects only one of the three concentrations (Journalism-Public Relations, Media Production, and Design Production), they must select either electives to total 120 or a minor outside the department of Media and Visual Arts (which may also require additional electives to total 120).
